Sri Lanka's trade continued to grow in 2017, with a total amount of 32.8 billion U.S.dollars, up 10.4 percent compared with 2016 according to the county’s customs. Of which, the exports were 11.46 billion U.S.dollars, up 12.3 percent, and imports were 21.34 billion U.S.dollars, up 9.5 percent. The trade deficit was 9.87 billion U.S.dollars, up 6.4 percent.

In the first half of 2018, Sri Lanka's trade in goods had rebounded. According to Sri Lankan Customs, the import and export of Sri Lanka's goods was 16.92 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 7.3 percent over the same period of 2017. Among them, exports were 5.63 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 0.9 percent; imports were 11.29 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 10.7 percent. The trade deficit was 5.65 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 22.7 percent.
